Albert T. Simeons was born in England during the early part of the last century. After the First World War, he had the opportunity to study at the prestigious University of Heidelberg School of Medicine, where he graduated with honors. Afterward, Dr. Simeons went on to specialize in the field of endocrinology, which is the field of medicine that deals with the glands in the body that secrete hormones*. As a licensed physician, he took up a post at a hospital in Hamburg at which victims of tropical diseases were treated and studied. Consequently, he developed a lifelong fascination with exotic disorders such as malaria, dengue fever, and leprosy. Eventually, Dr. Simeons traveled to Africa, and he moved to Mumbai (Bombay), India in 1930, where he would work for the next nineteen years. Among the patients, Dr. Simeons worked with were expectant mothers and people in whom a glandular disorder had caused extreme obesity. Although these two groups would appear to have little in common, the fact that Dr. Simeons was treating both would have a tremendous influence on the direction his research would take. It is safe to say that we would not even know about HCG as a weight-loss method, and Dr. Simeons’ protocols would not exist today. Interestingly, it was not even obesity that Dr. Simeons was initially treating, but rather a pituitary condition in boys that had caused the delay of secondary sexual characteristics in addition to large breasts and hips. Experiments with laboratory rats using the gonadotropin hormone hCG demonstrated that small injections could bring about precocious (early-onset) puberty, which made HCG a promising treatment for these boys. One of the unexpected effects was that the boys also began to drop their excess weight and the rest, as they say, is history. Eventually, Dr. Simeons wrote about his startling conclusions on obesity and its treatment in a paper entitled Pounds and Inches: A New Approach to Obesity, first published in 1954.
*Hormones are special forms of protein that act as chemical messengers, carrying instructions originating in the lower brain to specific cells.
